It begins at the German Historical Museum on the 19th of May, where we will tour the temporary exhibition Industrial Photography in Divided Germany. The exhibition shows photographs taken for industrial enterprises in East and West Germany between 1949 and 1990. The exhibition reveals the ideas associated with the historic visual sources, drawing out differences and similarities between East and West in their depictions of progress. But what role does material play in communicating the message?

The programme continues the next day, on the 20th of May, at the Berlin Glas studio, where Jeff Zimmer will teach us to paint on glass. Photography and text are important aspects of Jeff’s works, and we look forward to learning more about his practice together and learning an exciting technique!

Jeff is an Edinburgh-based artist with over 20 years of experience working with imagery on glass. His works are in various international museum collections. He won the 2019 British Glass Biennale, and Second Prize in the 2014 Coburg Prize for Contemporary Glass. Jeff has taught at the Edinburgh College of ArtPilchuck Glass School (US), North Lands Creative Glass (Scotland), Bild-Werk Frauenau (Germany), Berlin Glas, Urban Glass (Brooklyn), and elsewhere. He combines techniques of glass painting, laser etching, contemporary lighting, and the transparency of glass to create dynamic scenes that appear to shift, dissolve and transform depending on the position of the viewer. Jeff is also the co-founder of the Glass Lab Edinburgh.
