Multaka meets UNESCO-World Heritage

The Multaka World Heritage Tour changes the Berlin Museum Island into a lively place of exchange and encounter for participants. Join us on a trip through the history of the Museum Island and learn more about its historical origins. The interactive tour invites you to get to know the World Heritage site from different perspectives and to explore the question of the significance of World Heritage for us today.

The interactive guided tours rethink historical objects in the light of contemporary debates, in order to establish a connection between the past and the present. The tours also focus on transculturality and celebrate diverse perspectives, while encouraging cultural participation.

Arabic and Persian speaking visitors are able to join the Sunday tours without previous registration, and will be welcomed by our Multaka guides in the entrance hall of each museum. The Guides are holding a yellow Multaka banner. Participation is limited by 15 persons pro tour, and is on a first-come-first-serve basis. Bigger groups are requested to register beforehand.

Workshops

The Multaka workshops provide a frame, where people meet and work with one another to exchange experiences and emotions. The objects in the museums serve as launching points, to reflect on culture and history, as well as as inspiration for the creation of artifacts by workshop participants.

What can you experience and discover?

Works of art from almost all areas of the eastern Mediterranean and northern Africa can be discovered in the Museum of Byzantine Art in the Bode Museum. They reach deep into history and connect late antiquity with the Islamic period. The objects show a development of cultures in the different regions that goes back more than 1,500 years. Come by and be part of this journey.

What can you experience and discover?

We are back at the DHM Berlin with the new special exhibition „Wolf Biermann. A poet and songwriter in Germany“ (07.07.2023 – 02.07.2024)

Biermann is one of the best-known songwriters in Germany. The exhibition follows the songwriter`s development from his move to the GDR and initial artistic success to the ban that was imposed in his public performances and the eventual deprivation of his GDR citizenship. Our guided tours involve dialogues that examine key moments in his life, which can be relatable for many artists around the world, such as art and activism, exile and censorship. We also aim to take a look at the exhibition through a critical lens and discuss which such an exhibition would be worth a visit for our target audience.

What can you experience and discover?

A visit to the Collection of Classical Antiquities invites you to learn more about the cultural history of the Greeks, Etruscans and Romans. You will discover highlights of ancient art, Roman statues of the gods, immerse yourself in the world of Greek mythology and experience everyday life in the classical metropolis of Athens. We will bridge present and past and explore the question to which extent ancient Greece still influences our lives today.

What can you experience and discover?

Two collections await you in the Neues Museum. The Egyptian Museum and Papyrus Collection provides an insight into the continuity and change of ancient Egyptian culture over four millennia as well as the cultural history of ancient Sudan. The Museum of Prehistory and Early History displays archaeological exhibits from all over Europe and parts of Asia, showing the cultural history of those regions from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages. Come by and join us on this fascinating and tangible journey through time.

What can you experience and discover?

In the National Gallery, you can discover paintings and sculptures from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Our guided tour through the epoch collection provides a view of art between the French Revolution and the First World War, between Classicism and the Secessions. We invite you to get to know very different artistic themes and forms of expression and to discuss them.

Together, we’ll visit 5 stations on Museum Island where 5 museums are located, and discuss the evolution of museums as a phenomenon, and the cultural and architectural importance of them all.
